Ninth Graders Say the Darndest Things ...

Mom's home earlier this time.  She gave placement tests during class.  She was addressed as "Purple Teacher" in the quad today by a student who didn't know her name (she was wearing a purple sweater).  "Purple Teacher" is  definitely perferred over "Miss Homework" ... Yep, someone called her that once, too.

When she arrived home, she made this furry strange announcement:  "Cats, I have officially heard it all.  There is nothing that anyone can say to me from this day forth that will surprise me."

Wha'?

Mom then said that, as she was walking through the parking lot to get into the black masheen an' come home, a group of three ninth grade boys stopped her.  They called her by name, but she's never met them.  One of the boys then said, "We had to stop you to tell you that we like your posture."

Of course, Mom was flummoxed.  She said ... ever eloquent ... "Um, thank you?"

Another of the boys said, "Yeah.  You always walk with your head up.  It's like you're happy to be here."

Mom smiled and said "thank you" again.

Odd exchange, don'tcha think?  Although, having known Mom as long as I have, and knowing that Mom's taken thousands of hours of dancing lessons an' has participated in myriad 5K/8K/etc. walks over the past four decades, it's not surprising that she has excellent vertical presence.

Or maybe those ninth grade boys were just impressed with her height?

That is what Mom likes about working with kids, just when you think you have heard it all, they say something that totally surprises you. Good for the boys for being so aware and having a totally unique compliment.

Tell her to be careful. At 9th grade they are like young tom cats, just learning to sing the let's make kittens song. Maybe that is what they meant and they got it wrong.

A little odd coming from boys that age, but still a very nice compliment.

That's a marvelous story. They notice those little things. But this is not that little, is it? Coincidentally, I had noticed that I have started to bend as the day went on. More on a stressful day (which happens more often all the time lately.) Not only doesn't it look good (or inspiring), it feels bad. Every day I make a note to check myself several times. It improves even my outlook and attitude. Your mom has it right. So do those boys.
