Kosher Coca-Cola is available ...

BTW: This is our EIGHT HUNDREDTH post!

NOTE: Our intent with this post is entirely informative and not meant in any way to slander, defame, or demean Jews or the practice of Judaism.

Mom came home from shopping today with two-dozen bottles of "Kosher for Passover" Coca-Cola. If you've got a Ralph's grocery store in your neighborhood and would like to try Coke made with sucrose rather than high fructose corn syrup, beat your feet down before Passover ends so that you stand a chance of getting a bottle or ten. The recipe for the kosher soda is said to be the pre-1985 recipe ... the one used prior to the "New Coke" debacle.  This information is speculative, but the Coke does taste much like the formula still being produced in Mexico.

If you go to get some at Ralph's, take your Ralph's Club card because Coca-Cola products are "buy two, get THREE free" (with a limit of three free bottles) this week.  At $1.89 + California Redemption Value, the club card deal is pretty sweet ... almost as sweet as Coca-Cola made with sucrose.

Be sure to look for the yellow caps on the bottles. The caps on Mom's bottles have red lettering certifying approval by the Orthodox Union.  This designation certifies that the formula used has no grain (HFCS comes from corn.  Corn is one of the many grains that observant Jews aren't allowed to consume during Passover).  You might find yellow caps with black lettering ... like this picture.  One thing's for certain:  None of the kosher Coke caps have "My Coke Rewards" codes under them.  Sigh.

Rumor has it that "Passover Pepsi" is also available ... but Mom hasn't seen or tasted it.   San Diego Pepsi Bottlers use yellow caps on the high fructose corn syrup formula beverage, so Mom wouldn't know how to distinguish the Passover Pepsi from the usual stuff (other than reading the labels).

And supposedly, Dr. Pepper has a kosher formula available in selected markets during Passover.  Mom's heard that Texas is one of the only places to get it, but she doesn't like Dr. Pepper (other than the diet formula) anyway, so no big deal to her.

Mom isn't Jewish, but she's curious about other cultural practices, so she wanted to know a little about Passover.  Passover in 2008 will start on Sunday, the 20th of April and will continue for 7 days until Saturday, the 26th of April.    In the Jewish calendar, a holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day, so observing Jews will celebrate Passover on the sunset of Saturday, the 19th of April.

Passover commemorates the exodus of the Jews from Egypt where they had been enslaved.  More information about Passover and the Passover Seder can be found HERE or by searching "passover" utilizing a search engine such as Google.

Coool!! Congrats on 800 posts!!!! We will have to try to find the Kosher Coke. The Lap Lady is Jewish but she never seems able to keep the kosher holiday. Although this year she might easily do it since she's gluten free anyway.

Happy 800th Post.

Here in Virginia, our local grocery store is carrying the Kosher Coke too. Unfortunately, we can't redeem our bottles so no money back for us.
