Thursday Thirteen #25: Summer Reading List

While on her quarterly vacations, Mom tries to catch up on all of the things that she can't get accomplished while she's workin' ...

She FINALLY finished buildin' the *&#%@$ shed (and fillin' it with holiday decorations, camping gear, and other stuff) yesterday, and today she shampooed the carpet in the living room, dining room, and computer room 'cuz Cocoa Puff feels the need to protect his territory from the cats outside. She's also got Secret Paws presents to pack (and ship) ... Plus special presents that must be painted prior to mailing (surprise!).

During her spare time (mostly between 10 PM and 2 AM), she's been watchin' all of the stuff from the DVR (to include half a season ... way back to MARCH ... of "Cold Case," the season premiere of "The Closer," and a bunch of episodes of BBC America's "Hex") and reading.

One of Mom's favorite things to do is read ... Makes sense, right? She's an English and Reading teacher afterall.

Being a card-carrying friend of Amazon.com, Mom buys oodles and oodles of books. She's got a stack about three feet high of books she's neglected over the past few months. When she finishes reading her books, Grandma reads many of them. Grandad has FINALLY started reading better stuff that Mom turned him onto, so the books get read by him. And then Mom takes 'em to school where a number of her colleagues read them, too. Mom considers her classroom lending library to be an investment and asset to the school's culture: a good way to make sure that she sees her colleagues at least once in awhile.

Aside from "Harry Potter #7" which gets released when Mom goes back to work (and a book that she'll likely read in one sitting ... and then mope about 'cuz the series will be over), here's a list of the top thirteen books that Mom intends to get read between June 15th and July 9th, 2007 ... Notice that not a single book has anything to do with school, teenagers, or education. Mom likes junky-fluff books.

"Summer Vacation" Reading List
What she intends to read and what's she's already managed to finish ... plus a rating system (fair, good, excellent)

1. The Overlook: Michael Connelly (finished) ... good

2. Lean Mean Thirteen: Janet Evanovich

3. The Sixth Target: James Patterson (finished) ... good

4. The Sleeping Doll: Jeffrey Deaver

5. Deal Breaker: Harlan Coben (finished) ... fair

6. Night of the Living Deb: Susan McBride

7. Murder of a Botoxed Blonde: Denise Swanson

8. Corpse Suzette AND Fat Free and Fatal: G.A. McKevett

9. Pressed to Kill: Dolores Johnson

10. A Crazy Little Thing Called Death: Nancy Martin

11.
No Nest for the Wicket: Donna Andrews

12. Sofie Metropolis: Tori Carrington

13. The Cat Who Had 60 Whiskers: Lillian Jackson-Braun

And if time permits ... Bloody Waters by Carolina Garcia-Aguilera

I figure that Mom should be able to read all of these books in a couple of weeks ... And I'll get to sit on her lap LOTS 'cuz she doesn't usually read standing up! Win/win!

Oooh those look good. Mommy just finished We, the Jury written with the help of the Scott Peterson jury. Actually she finished it sitting in the courtroom waiting for Phyllis' sentencing hearing. Today she started the first Harry Potter. Can you believe that she's never read any of them? Well she bought the first one and is going to read her way through them this summer.

That's a great list. My Mom has read the 6th Target, The Cat with 60 Whiskers, and she's getting Lean Mean 13 and Sleeping Doll. We've watched all the Harry Potter movies, does that count? Some of the other ones look good. Mom says, she'll have to try them out. She likes the same kind of books. Cool. Have a great Friday.
