Who was the last person you hugged?

I actually hugged one of my colleagues about an hour ago. He was celebrating his birthday (he’s a Leap Day baby) and today he turned FOURTEEN. He’s a wonderful man and a terrific science teacher ... And he’s an awesome hugger, too.

Soup
Share a beauty or grooming trick or tip with us.

Well, I guess it’s not really a beauty or a grooming trick/tip, but it does help you to organize a beauty product. I’m one of those people who loves the little samples of perfume, but could never use one up in a single application. If you allow them to lay on their sides, they leak. When I worked at Big 5 Sporting Goods back in college, I bought a little green plastic case that a gun enthusiast would use to hold shells for a rifle. The tiny glass vials fit perfectly into the separate slots and they stand upright. No more leaking ... and the shell case keeps them “fresh,” too.

Salad
What does the color yellow make you think of?

Yellow makes me think of marshmallow Peeps ... and I don’t even LIKE marshmallow Peeps.

Main Course
If you were to make your living as a photographer, what subject would your pictures revolve around?

I suppose that I’d photograph the Northern California Coast. If you haven’t been between Crescent City and the Oregon border, you really need to make a visit. It’s breath-taking and never the same view twice.

Dessert
What was the longest book you ever read?

When I was in high school, the longest book that I ever read was The Jungle by Upton Sinclair.

I’ve read all of the Harry Potter series ... those books are long, but so engrossing. I’ve read some long textbooks, too ... but not cover-to-cover. And I’ve never been able to commit to reading the Bible as literature.

Friday Fill-Ins #61

1. I'm looking forward to _watching my students’ musical ... They’re producing “Grease” with a filipino and hispanic cast. (It should be an interesting interpretation.)_ next week.

2. I don't handle _phone calls _ very well ... because  I don't hear all that well.  I do better in person.

3. _PIZZA_ is something I could eat every day.

4. Warmth and sunlight _are the key words for San Diego’s Chamber of Commerce brochures ... They’re our middle names_.

5. _VACATION_ here I come!  March 14th is the last day of quarter three.  Then, I have jury duty.  Sigh.

6. I _abhor_ tattoo(s).  And don't get me started on the "branding" that athletes get on their bodies.  YUCK.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to _resting and getting rid of this upset stomach that I’ve had all week_, tomorrow my plans include _sleep late and watch “Jurassic Park 3” on VHS ... and in Spanish ... because one of my special ed. students insists that it’s a “great movie” and I have to watch it because I like dinosaurs_ and Sunday, I want to _finish these darn afghans if they KILL me_!

Thursday Thirteen -- #56 Is it icy where YOU live?

We'll try not to gloat too much, but on Wednesday (2/27) the high temperature for downtown San Diego was 77 degrees. At Mom's school, it was 80 degrees with not a single cloud in the azure sky. It was a GORGEOUS day tailor-made for playin' hooky. Too bad Mom's such a good egg an' worked a full day ... hooky could have been fun.

Anyway, Thursday's forecast is more of the same ... so we thought that we'd show you a place FAR COLDER than where you live. Our friend Lana sent us a set of photos from a place in Switzerland that takes its ice furry seriously. Take a look!

All of these icy scenes take place in Versoix, Switzerland (a town close to Geneva City). LĂ©man Lake is the “water” in the background.

Here's our Thursday Thirteen of a place that's COLDER than here (or just about anywhere else except Bismarck, N.D.) ... We're SO GLAD that we live in a place where the coldest it tends to get is 'bout 33 degrees ... an' that's at NIGHT.

BTW: This last photo is what the black masheen would look like if Mom took it over to this place in Switzerland an' left it outside all by itself. I'm sure that the black masheen is grateful that the only exposure to "snow" that it ever got was about ten years ago when Mom was driving back from visitin' our Great-Great Aunt Vivian who used to be a "snowbird" (Our auntie was a birdie?!?) in Yuma, AZ. Mom got to drive through a snow storm where the snow was fallin' horizontally instead of vertically. The black masheen nearly got buried a dozen times by jerks drivin' big Urban Assault Vehicles at way above the speed limit. Yeesh!

Sunday Humor: Snowy South Dakota

Mom's friends, Lana an' Dennis, have been featured many times on this blog.  Two years ago, they moved to South Dakota from the hustle an' bustle of San Diego.  They like the slower pace, the lack of tagging an' gangs, and the friendliness of "small town" life.  The one thing that they don't seem to like quite that much is the weather:  Namely, the snow.

The poem (author unknown) an' the cartoon come from Lana as "commentary" on snow an' its problems.  I must mention that they have two woofie girls ... Min Pins ... named Toni an' Katie ... who aren't that fond of snow, either.
It’s winter in South Dakota
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles an hour
At twenty-five below.
Oh, how I love South Dakota
When the snow’s up to your butt
You take a breath of "winter"
And your nose gets frozen shut.
Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I’ll hang around
I could never leave South Dakota
‘Cause I’m frozen to the ground.

I'm gonna go on-record an' state that the Feline Americans an' I are furry appreciative that it never snows here at the beach an' the coldest it ever gets is about 33 degrees.  Oh, an' we have LITTER BOXES, so we never have to "go" outside!

Kitties rule!!!

We won! Thanks Skeeter, L.C., an' Ayla!

We got a package from Skeeter, L.C. an' Ayla.  We won one of their contests last month:  Create a middle name for L.C.  We chose the middle name "Diana" 'cuz L.C.'s last name is the family name of the deceased Princess of Wales an' we think that L.C. has regal bearing, so the name "Diana" made a lot of sense to us.

Here's our prize pack with some delicious Temptations an' a pink fev-ver boa that Mom's gonna attach to our Barbie wand toy so that we can play with it as a group (otherwise, Charmee will take it for himself an' it will be fev-ver free in five minutes or less).

Thank you to Skeeter, L.C., Ayla, an' the Big Thing (who has beautiful printing that he wrote on the envelope ... penmanship is furry important when dealin' with the people in the bloo shorts.  The Big Thing gets an A+ in penmanship!).

Mooommmmmm ... I want some Temptations ... Now, please!

Saturday Photo Hunt #57: WOODEN!

WOODEN!

The Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt theme for this week is WOODEN!

We were thinkin' of putting up a photo of Nicolas Cage or Kevin Costner 'cuz ... while both good-lookin' doods ... neither acts furry well an' both come across as pretty "wooden" ... But then we'd be violatin' the rules of the Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt 'cuz we've never met (or photographed) either "actor" ... an' that wouldn't be good.

So we decided to post a photo of something (or some THINGS) that have been competing with us for lap time:  Mom's WOODEN coat hanger projects.

Mom's friends get four custom coat hangers as part of their birthday an' Christmas presents each year.  Each lady has her own yarn type an' color of ribbon.  When Mom gets some free time, she tries to do one lady's present an' get it put away in her closet until it's needed.

But with some babies comin', Mom's been concentrating on getting lots of tiny hangers completed along with her usual stash.  She uses her jigsaw that she bought at K-Mart to cut two inches off of each side of the WOODEN hangers to make 'em "baby sized".

Here's what she's been makin' since last weekend.  She still has LOTS to do as there's LOTS of yarn in the crochet bin in her closet (we've been investigating the crochet bin an' snoopervising the crocheting ... we've also been doing quality assurance testing on the yarn balls to make sure that they taste good an' roll smoothly).  When Mom's finished with the hangers, she has two baby sweaters to complete, an afghan to trim, an' two afghans to make from the first stitch.   ARRRGGGHHH ... We want our LAP back!!!

The hangers that Mom buys are WOODEN ones made by Merrill that come in packs of two for $3.99.  She can only find them at Long's Drugs, so when she sees 'em, she has to buy all of the packs that are in the store.  The cashiers think that she's WEIRD 'cuz she buys $50.00 worth of WOODEN coat hangers an' nothin' else.

Since she learned to make these crochet coat hangers back in seventh grade Home Ec. class ("Thanks, Mrs. Diane Ogden!!!"), Mom's probably made about 500 of them.  People always seem to like receiving them 'cuz they hold onto sweaters an' clothes with straps (or satiny/silky things) furry well.

Feast One Hundred & Eighty

Have you ever played a practical joke on anyone? If so, what did you do and who was your victim?

I've never played a practical joke on anyone because practical jokes always seem to be rooted in "meanness" ... I did surprise someone though ...

It was in August of 1990 and I wasn't going with the family on vacation. The family left and I decided that I needed to be there despite the fact that I didn't have any way of getting there (I had a premonition that I HAD to act upon). My aunt and her friend drove a thousand plus miles out of their way to pick me up and deliver me to grandma and grandpa's house in Rochester, WA.

I'm glad that I was there because my grandmother died about eight months later. I'm forever indebted to my aunt (Toni) for taking pity on me and offering me a ride.

Soup
What do your salt and pepper shakers look like?

The ones at school sitting in my 'fridge are tiny glass ones from my friend, Marisol. The ones at home are ancient white Tupperware ones. The "fancy" ones are Noritake china with pink roses and gold rims.

Salad
Where is the next place you plan to visit (on vacation or business)?

Salem, Oregon ... Seattle, Washington ... and maybe Idaho again. I'm hoping to leave on March 18th and drive up there on my own.

Main Course
What kind of lotion or cream do you use to keep your hands from getting too dry?

I have some apple-scented lotion at school in a red rubber apple that I've got on my desk. I have some cedar/sage lotion in my bathroom that I got from Bath and Body Works.

Dessert
Make up a dessert, tell us its ingredients, and give it a name.

Hmmm ... I love desserts, but I'm not very creative about them. I'm gonna pass on this question as I have a pretty nasty stomach ache right now and the thought of eating or drinking anything makes me want to barf.

Friday Fill-Ins #60

1. _Being alone on the open road with a full iPod, a cooler of icy Coca-Cola, and the top down_ are the best things about traveling.

2. I love a good  _NAP_ when I'm cold.

3. I often use _Clorox wipes when I'm cleaning because they're just one step _.

4. I'm reading _____ right now; I _____ it. I actually just finished the Saint Patrick's Day Murder by Leslie Meyer not more than an hour ago. I read A LOT of light mystery novels (mostly to tick off my Reading students ... I read a new book every day).

5. _Money_ is something I dislike talking about.

6. When I visited _Spokane, WA_ I most looked forward to seeing _Montie and Whimpy_.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to _afternoon tea at the Westgate Hotel_, tomorrow my plans include _having lunch with my mom_ and Sunday, I want to _finish some crochet projects that I started, but can't seem to finish_!

Saturday Photo Hunt #56: FREE!

FREE!

The Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt theme for this week is FREE!

The theme this week could be interpretted in many, many different ways, but we chose to choose the "free" that means "at no financial cost to obtain" ...

This is a photo collage of all of the "free to a good home" pets that Mom has shared her life with over the past thirty-something years.  You'll notice that Mom's woofie ... Peaches ... isn't in the photo 'cuz Grandma an' Grandad paid about twenty-five dollars to adopt her in the early 1970s.  She wasn't "free" although the woman who had owned her had been delighted to have Peaches (nee "Deana") taken off her hands.

You'll also notice that Cocoa Puff is the only Feline American missing from the collage.  Puffy is the only one of us who cost something to adopt:  The South San Diego Veterinary Hospital charged Mom twenty dollars when Mom adopted him at six weeks old.  He wasn't "free" either.

The rest of us didn't cost a single penny to adopt.  Meemaw brought her kittens (Cookie Monster, Lacey Bunns, an' Percy) to Mom back in 1988.  Meemaw was homeless, an' the kittens were so cute, so Mom adopted all four.  Toby showed up on Mom's street in 1989.  He was tiny, blood-covered, an' infested with fleas.  He adopted Mom.

Dolly Pop an' Fudge Ripple both arrived (separately, of course) as adults in 1990.  Neighborhood kids were trying to hurt them with their bicycles, so Mom let them in  ... an' they stayed.

My brother and I had ... as kittens ... belonged to people who lived up the street from Mom.  When they moved to Oregon in the dead of night, they abandoned us.  Mom let us move in ... we were "free to a good home."

Sparky Fuzzypants, Pumpkin, an' Lucky Charmz were all abandoned in Mom's yard as kittens weighing less than a pound each when they were rescued an' adopted by Mom.

The word "FREE" means a lot to us.  We didn't cost a thing ...

Fashion Show Friday featurin' SpongeBob-sweater Charmee!

FASHION SHOW FRIDAY!

Check out the spiffy sweater that Charmee is sportin'!

Mom found it at Walgreens an' actually bought it for our woofie friend Whimpy ('cuz where Whimpy lives there's more than 65 inches of snow).

But it's been furry cold here an' Charmee has very short fur, so Mom agreed to let Charmee put on the sweater to "see if it'll fit Whimpy" ...

Charmee actually LIKES this sweater, so Mom may be goin' back to Walgreens for another one in size medium ...

An' ... if you'll notice ... "fashion" looks SO MUCH MORE FASHIONABLE when the supermodel is atop an authentic GIZZY QUILT made by Millie's momma, Lynne.

Thank you to China Cat Sunflower an' Willow!

Lucky Charmz an' Cocoa Puff got a present for Valentine's Day.  It arrived yesterday an' it was furry mysterious.  Efurryone had to smell the package that came all the way from the Midwest.  It smelled DELICIOUS an' we had to know what was in it.
Since it was addressed to Charmee an' Puffy, they got to open it (drat!).

Lookie what was inside:  Two Valentine's Day cards (one to Charmee from Willow an' one to Puffy from China Cat Sunflower) ... The cards even had photos on the fronts!  Nifty!

Ooooo ... an' there were TEMPTATIONS in the package.  The NEW kind that are "naturals" ... They are yummy (so the boys agreed to share).

An' there were two Cosmic Catnip Valentine's Day pillows to sniff (an' bunny-kick).  Yay!

Thank you, ladies!  The Valentine's Day package was a real hit!
Luf,
Puffy an' Charmee

Name one thing that is unique about you.

I was a “lefty” up until the first week of Kindergarten when my teacher decided to “spare me difficulties later in life” and make me right-handed. To this day, I cannot hold a pencil or eating utensil with my left hand and have it be usable.

Soup
Fill in the blank:

My favorite __flavor_ is __chocolate_ but I like _blueberry and blackberry_ too.

Salad
What type of wood do you have for your home’s furnishings?

The “woods” in my home are a motley bunch of blond-ish oaks and medium maples.

Main Course
Who do you talk to most often on the phone?

I don’t “do” phone ... I don’t hear well on the phone and typically have little to say other than what’s absolutely needed. I suppose I talk to my mom most, but I make about four calls a month.

Dessert
What level of responsibility do you have in your job?

On the “whole company” front, virtually none. In my classroom, I am queen of all I survey ... and responsible for everything (even cleaning ... my custodian is useless with a capital "U" ... I wish that I had my former custodian back.  Ferdie got re-assigned to another building and I miss him every day.  He was quick, thorough, and very personable.  I think I may be the only person on campus who he greets by name and immediately rushes over to hug.  Sigh.

A piece of advice to everyone:  Be good to your custodians and secretaries.

A Funny on a Monday

Mom's good friend Lana was in town a few days ago an' Mom was delighted to see her.  Lana an' her husband, Dennis, moved to South Dakota nearly two years ago.  Some of Mom's fambly live nearby in Yankton an' Sioux Falls, so Mom can relate to this little joke that Lana sent ...

Phones in the Church

A man decided to write a book about churches around the country. He started by flying to Iowa and started working west from there. Going to a church, in Westfield, Iowa he began taking photographs and making notes. He spotted a golden telephone on the vestibule wall and was intrigued with a sign, which read 'Calls: $10,000 a minute.'

Seeking out the pastor he asked about the phone and the sign. The pastor answered that this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to heaven and if he pays the price he can talk directly to God.

Finally, he arrived in South Dakota, upon entering a church in Elk Point, behold - he saw the usual golden telephone. But THIS time, the sign read 'Calls: 35 cents.'

Fascinated, he asked to talk to the pastor, 'Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I have found this golden telephone and have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but in the other churches the cost was $10,000 a minute. Your sign reads only 35 cents a call. Why?'

The pastor, smiling benignly, replied, 'Son, you're in South Dakota now......You're in God's Country. It's a local call.'

Saturday Photo Hunt #55: HEAVY!

HEAVY!

The Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt theme for this week is HEAVY!

Mom brought home the "school" camera that her club owns so that we could take some photos while the Sony DSC T1 is bein' repaired.

We were gonna take photos of our heavyweights:  Cocoa Puff an' Pumpkin.  Nah.  Too easy.

We settled on taking a photo of the black leather behemoth that Grandma carries around efurryday:  Her purse.  If you knew Grandma ... an' had occasion to see her purse ... you'd understand.  Grandma's purse has efurrything but the kitchen sink in it.  She's prepared for efurry emergency.

The first photo is taken with the purse atop the bathroom scale.  What you can't see is that Grandma's Stone Mountain "hobo" shoulder bag weighs SIX POUNDS!  That's as much as Daisy the Curly Cat!

The second photo is what makes the purse so heavy ... check out the contents!  Grandma has Charms candies, a cough drop, some giant Smartees in a plastic bag, two "fun size" M&Ms, a plastic M&Ms container with mini M&Ms, Dex glucose tablets, wash-ups, peppermints, a hanky, a mini bottle of water, tape measure, wallet, keys, sunglasses (and extra darkening lenses, coupon holder, "fix it" holder, nail mending kit, plastic bag, Target "green" bag, lip gloss case, tablet with pen, extra pens, phone book, phone and phone case, coin purse, and Blistex.

When all that stuff lands on a table or in the backseat of a car, it makes a mighty thud.  It's furry HEAVY!

1. I'm looking forward to _the Oscars ... even though I haven't seen very many films this year (let alone ones that have been nominated)_.

2. _New Orleans (but not during Mardi Gras)_ is a place I always wanted to visit and haven't made it there yet.

3. I've fallen in love with _the idea of taking another vacation by car. I may actually get to take one this spring (keep your fingers crossed)_.

4. Six of one, _half a dozen of the other_.

5. Addiction _seems to be the celebrity "thing" of the moment_.

6. The _ninth grade boys in my third period class_ crack me up! You'd really have to be there to understand how much they remind me of three-month-old Lab puppies. They'd pretty well do anything that I asked of them and they try very, very hard to please. Yesterday, I had seven boys and two girls helping me to fill salad deliveries for the staff luncheon that I was hosting. We worked assembly-line style with each student in charge of an ingredient. Then they were sent all over the campus to delivery the lunches. Such eagerness ... they're such puppies.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to _eating out with my mom_, tomorrow my plans include _making the 185 chocolate roses needed before Valentine's Day_ and Sunday, I want to _finish one of the baby afghans_!

Thursday Thirteen -- #55 Busy, busy ...

Oh, the stuff that needs doin'!

Today's Thursday Thirteen features all of the stuff that needs doin' before Valentine's Day.  Some of the stuff is ours to do, but MOST of the stuff is for Mom.

1.  Address, sign, fill, lick, stamp, an' mail the Valentines.

2.  Shop for presents for Mom's "girls" for the next Outback dinner (it's Mom's turn to pay, too).

3.  Select Valentine gift for student aide to go with nifty Sephora make-up bag.

4.  Finish afghan for Mom's cousin.

5.  Box up presents for Mom's auntie an' cousins.  Put 'em in the mail.

6.  Finish 'nip Valentine puffs for our friends an' Valentines.  Address plastic package pouches an' put 'em in the mail.

7.  Clean up after hostin' ANOTHER faculty fund-raising luncheon at school today (Chinese Chicken Salad for Chinese New Year).

8.  Write lesson plan for principal so that he won't be so freaked out when the SAIT team arrives next week for an inspection ... Mom stayed late this afternoon to do it right away.

9.  Progress reports are due tomorrow afternoon.

10.  Before she can do the progress reports, she has to grade agendas, vocabulary, and silent reading logs plus proctor three spelling tests and three vocabulary tests ... grade 'em all ... an' put them into the gradebook an' the computer.

11.  Make 185 more chocolate roses for the Valentine's Day sale.

12.  Get trained on Data Director.

13.  Make two more afghans:  One for a colleague (girl) an' one for a former student (doesn't know yet).

Maybe Mom will have some time to charge the school camera an' take photos of us for the Photo Hunt THIS weekend?!?

Oh, an' Mom needs to get us some neat-o Valentine's Day stuff 'cuz she loves us the best.

Money-matters on Monday

IMPORTANT NOTICE!

Mom went shopping at Petco yesterday to buy us some kibbles.  While she was at the cash register payin' for the food, she saw a notice taped to the counter about a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT regarding Petco's return policy an' the violation of California consumers' rights.

If you live in California an' made any returns to Petco using a credit or debit card between January 26, 2004 and February 26, 2007, you are eligible to participate in a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT.

You need to visit the Petco Settlement website and click on the "claim form" link.  A form will appear an' you need to print out the form, fill it out an' sign it, an' then put it into the mail in an addressed envelope (with a first class stamp affixed) to be a part of the "class".

For your trouble, you will receive a $20.00 giftcard to PETCO.

There are furry many members of the cat blogosphere who live with their 'beans in California.  The lawsuit isn't limited to cats ... products for ANY type of animal that were paid for with a credit or debit card and were THEN RETURNED,  make your 'bean eligible.

If you're curious, here is a screenshot of the Petco Settlement page.

(Click form to biggify!)

FYI:  THE FORM MUST BE COMPLETED AND RETURNED
BY NO LATER THAN APRIL 28, 2008 TO BE ELIGIBLE!

Our cousins (Zoey, Gandalf the Grey, Chewbacca the Wookitty, Smoke, an' Cha-Ching) gave us this award:  "E for Excellent".

We're furry honored to be thought of as "Excellent" ... Wow!

Thank you to our wonderful cousins ...

An' we wanna pass this award on to Roxy an' Lucky, Boy, Jake an' Bathsheba, Pollux an' Castor, Millie, and Grr, Midnight, an' Cocoa (with Rascal an' Riley, too).

Saturday Photo Hunt #54: Narrow ... with technical difficulties

NARROW!

The Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt theme for this week is Narrow!

We were all ready to show the yarn that Mom's using to make an afghan for our soon-to-be-born cousin, Ethan.  Mom's cousins ... Sunny an' her husband, Aaron ... are gonna have a baby boy bean in April.  Mom's making a pretty afghan for the baby using yarn called TLC Wiggles in baby boy colors.  It's almost finished ... but there's still some super narrow yarn left that needs to be worked into the project.

So ... why isn't there a nice photo of the yarn an' the almost-finished afghan?  Our Sony Cybershot DSC T1 flipped out this morning.  The LCD screen went all snowy an' blurry ... so it won't take pictures.

Thankfully, Sony will be fixing the camera free of charge.  The bad thing is that we don't have a photo for the Photo Hunt this week.  We'll be up an' running next week 'cuz Mom has a camera at school that she'll bring home on Monday.

Until then ... nuts.

What is your favorite kind of cereal?

I don't drink milk, so I don't tend to eat cereal very often ... But when I do, I like Chex (any flavor) the best. I also like Special K. The only "sugary" cereals that I like are Cap'n Crunch with Crunch Berries and Count Chocula.

Soup
When was the last time you purchased something for your home, what was it, and in which room did it g
o?

I bought a hyacinth bulb in a little plastic pot. I bought it two weeks ago outside of a Trader Joe's in La Jolla, CA. It cost all of $2.99. The bulb is atop my etagere in my bathroom. It has bloomed into a lovely pink flower that scents my bathroom quite nicely.

Salad
What is the funniest commercial you’ve ever seen?

Since I have a DVR, I tend to fast-forward through commercials ... I like the Jack in the Box commercials with the holiday antenna balls and I like some soda commercials ... but my favorite commercial has to be the "Nothing but Net" commercial for McDonald's that featured Larry Bird and Michael Jordan.
