The theme this week could be interpretted in many, many different ways, but we chose to choose the "free" that means "at no financial cost to obtain" ...
This is a photo collage of all of the "free to a good home" pets that Mom has shared her life with over the past thirty-something years. You'll notice that Mom's woofie ... Peaches ... isn't in the photo 'cuz Grandma an' Grandad paid about twenty-five dollars to adopt her in the early 1970s. She wasn't "free" although the woman who had owned her had been delighted to have Peaches (nee "Deana") taken off her hands.
You'll also notice that Cocoa Puff is the only Feline American missing from the collage. Puffy is the only one of us who cost something to adopt: The South San Diego Veterinary Hospital charged Mom twenty dollars when Mom adopted him at six weeks old. He wasn't "free" either.
The rest of us didn't cost a single penny to adopt. Meemaw brought her kittens (Cookie Monster, Lacey Bunns, an' Percy) to Mom back in 1988. Meemaw was homeless, an' the kittens were so cute, so Mom adopted all four. Toby showed up on Mom's street in 1989. He was tiny, blood-covered, an' infested with fleas. He adopted Mom.
Dolly Pop an' Fudge Ripple both arrived (separately, of course) as adults in 1990. Neighborhood kids were trying to hurt them with their bicycles, so Mom let them in ... an' they stayed.
My brother and I had ... as kittens ... belonged to people who lived up the street from Mom. When they moved to Oregon in the dead of night, they abandoned us. Mom let us move in ... we were "free to a good home."
Sparky Fuzzypants, Pumpkin, an' Lucky Charmz were all abandoned in Mom's yard as kittens weighing less than a pound each when they were rescued an' adopted by Mom.
The word "FREE" means a lot to us. We didn't cost a thing ...

Wow! The firstest cat was free when Mom's furiend's cat had kittens in 1973. The cat afore Bonnie was free when her beans gotted divorced in 1993. Bonnie was free when Dad's coworker's cat had kittens in 1997. I wasn't free cuz I camed from a shelter. Mom paid $75.
Lookin at alla them vet bills an food bills an stuff, Grandad says "There's no such thing as a free cat."
And yet you're all extremely valuable, like in priceless! :)
You may have all been free, but you more than make up furr it in love and companionship.
Well you may have been free, but you are truly priceless and worth more than the finest treasure.
What a wonderful take on free!
You are all furry lucky cats (and so are yer beans)!
We were going to say almost the exact same thing as Luxor did! And you all are rich in love and companionship!
Purrs and headbutts,
Sabrina, Sam and Simon
Yes, ecksacktly what Daisy said, priceless and worth more than the finest tresure. Alla us Ballicai was "free" cuz we came to our momma and daddy, we chosed them! And us Ballicai are four of the brightest lights in our momma's and daddy's lives.
What a sweet postie!
Kittyhugs and purrs from MaoMao!
I wasn't "free" because my Food Lady got me from the Humane Society but China Cat was found at my Food Lady's office so she was never paid for at all! Just like all of you, my Food Lady thinks that we are priceless!
Purrrrrs, Willow
That is a wonderful montage. Your mom is a very special lady. We were not free either. Mom can't remember if Muffie and Bridget were free, she thinks they were. But we can all give lots of love.
Roxy
You are all priceless, although you were free. We weren't free, but sadly our dad is extremely allergic to cats with fur, so we were worth the cost.
What a sweet collage. Free as in free loving, free of judgements and free of hate.

This is a wonderful post.

Daisy is right...y'all is worth more than any amount of money. You is wonnerful.
Very truly yours,
The Whiskers & Purrs Gang
Wow! Me and That Thing are fwee too. Though we made Mummy spend A WOT on toys and foodies and what not after the adoption! Heheh...
What a lovely post - and I agree with evfurryone who has said you may have been free, but you are priceless. Oliver came from a pet shop and cost £3, William came from a breeder and cost squillions of GB£s and Cybil was free coz her human's boyfriend didn't like her. Sheesh, I'd have got rid of the boyfriend! All 3 were beyond price to me:) xxx
dmm, this is a great post!
suzanne and ben 1 were free. i cost mom $35 when she got me from the shelter. mom was happy to pay.
the woman who gave lucy to mom offered to give money to take her! lol
actually, i was wondering, could i send lucy to you? for free of course! she's such a baby sister. sigh.
love
ben
(lucy says: but i don't want to go anywhere! i want to stay with you, ben! although, dmm, you feel free--there's that word again!--to send your momma up to us!
(mom says i need to learn the appropriate use of exclamation points! i think they're appropriate all the time!)
Gee, we askt The Big Thing about "that kinna free" an he said we 3 now are the only kitties he efer paid for. He said LC and I cost $10 each and Ayla cost $100.
What? She cost like, um, 2 paws-worth more than we did? That's embarasin, so we arent telling her.
Skeeter
We were free, but that grumpy cat cost $65 to the shelter!
What a wonderful collage of pricesless kitties!
You know what? The best things in life are free! Like me! And you guys!
I was a "free" kitty! Empress is a bit unusual, she is pedigreed, but was not a good breeder, and had such emotional problems she couldn't show, and would need extra special care to become a pet so her owners gave her away free. The snag was she was half way cross the country so daddy paid for travel exam/papers, a plane ticket and a carrier so momma and I could have her. Her previous owners coved the rest of her medical expenses. :) ~Queen Snickers
this is my absolute favourite entry into the FREE contest, it is so touching and meaningful. the Best things in life are free :) x
frees is the most valuable... :) meow...
Your Mum has had many priceless feline friends over the years!
I guess that just goes to show that the best things in life are free!
By the way, thanks for the Valentine's goodies. We really appreciate them.
I was a free kitty, at least for my current Bean, but then, I came from the wild, so...
Hi Daisy Mae,
Thanks for stopping by my blog and sending your congrats. What a bunch of cute kitties you have featured. Somethings are truely priceless!!
What a great take on "free." We've also heard the "no such thing as a free pet" phrase. We feel like the love we give our beans on a daily basis more than makes up for the cost of getting us from the breeder, and the cost of vet care, food and toys. All pets are priceless to their families!
All pets are very valuable to their owners...mommy said that she cannot imagine life without me .
